Overview

The neo-Gothic Palace of Westminster has been the meeting place of the UK Parliament since the 11th century, though most of what stands today dates from Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin's 1840s rebuild after fire destroyed the original. The 96-metre Elizabeth Tower — universally known as Big Ben after its 13.5-tonne bell — is one of the world's most photographed clocks. UK residents can climb the tower on advance-booked tours; overseas visitors can join public tours of the Houses of Parliament, or simply cross Westminster Bridge at dusk when the façade is floodlit.
