The Grand Palace

Overview

Built in 1782 by King Rama I as the seat of the newly founded Chakri dynasty, the Grand Palace remains the ceremonial home of the Thai monarchy and Bangkok's most visited landmark. Inside the walled 218,000 m² compound sits Wat Phra Kaew and the Emerald Buddha — a 66 cm jasper image draped in gold vestments changed by the King three times a year. Strict dress code applies: shoulders and knees must be covered. Arrive at opening (08:30) to beat the tour-bus crowds, and combine with Wat Pho next door.
